Helicopter Operations

We use helicopters regularly to inspect, upgrade and perform maintenance on our transmission lines, manage vegetation in power corridors and assess damage after storms.

This unique aerial perspective allows us to proactively maintain and upgrade hundreds of miles of hard-to-access power lines, keeping our electric system robust and reliable.

Inspect and upgrade our transmission lines

Transmission lines bring reliable electricity to millions of people and are critical to delivering clean energy.

Our contract crews are flown by helicopter to conduct transmission work including upgrades and maintenance, allowing for minimal impact on wildlife while increasing reliability. These areas are often difficult to access, have rocky terrain and can be dangerous for workers on the ground.

When performing aerial inspections, the helicopter is equipped with heat-sensing infrared scanning technology, which can detect potential equipment issues before they occur.

Manage vegetation

To help maintain our transmission lines and increase reliability, we use a low-flying helicopter with a tree trimmer hanging from the bottom to cut back vegetation from the sides of power line corridors.

This trimming method helps to significantly reduce the amount of time it takes climbing crews to conduct the work manually, and reduces the risk of injury to tree crews working in hard-to-reach areas that are rocky or have dense vegetation.
The aerial saw is suspended below the helicopter and carefully guided by the pilot. It has 10 rotating blades powered by its own auxiliary engine and measures 90 to 120 feet in length.

Assist with storm efforts

Helicopter patrols are often performed before and after storms. Patrols prior to severe weather allow us to proactively spot and address any hazards that could cause a safety or reliability issue.

Helicopter inspections of our transmission system also play a critical role in our post-storm recovery efforts.

The bird's-eye view helps us identify any repairs that may be needed after storms in order to ensure continued reliability for our customers.
