Opting Out of a Smart Meter
Only certain residential customers can opt out of receiving an electric smart meter. You need to receive notification via U.S. Mail that you’ll be receiving a smart meter in the next few months to opt out.
You will be able to opt out if you’re classified as rates:
- R-1
- R-2
- R-3
- R-4
Your rate can be found on page 2 of your electric bill under “Total Charges for Electricity.” See a sample electric bill.
If you qualify and elect to opt out, we’ll replace your current meter with a non-communicating meter.
You’ll be charged a $42 one-time service fee for this exchange and a $34 monthly fee to have your meter read manually. If you choose to have the smart meter installed at a later date, there will be an additional $42 charge. These charges would be included in your monthly bill.
If you opt out, you will miss out on the benefits of an electric smart meter including bill forecasting and advanced outage detection.
If you received a notification in the mail that you’ll be receiving a smart meter in the next few months and you'd like to opt out, please contact us.
